Practical (skills-forming): to teach students listening comprehension, speaking on the topic, answering questions on the content of the text.

Equipment: computer, DVD player, slides on the topic “Television”, handouts (cards)

T: Good morning, children! I’m glad to see you. How are you?

Ps: I’m fine! I’m very good! I’m so-so! I’m bad! I’m very bad!

T: Who is on duty today?

P1: … is.

T: Who is absent?

P2: … is. / All are present.

T: At our lesson we are going to talk about television, your TV preferences, and to debate on the question if TV brings more harm than good.

II. Warming up: Vocabulary revision (5 min.)

T: What do you think about the quotation on the first slide?

T: To start our conversation let’s remember active vocabulary of our topic “Television”. Now 2 children will go to the blackboard and translate some words from Ukrainian into English (cards). While they are working at the blackboard we are watching slides and guess what kinds of programme you can see on the pictures. (Slides)

T: You see that there are different kinds of programmes on TV. Who can imagine his or her life without TV? Sure, nobody can. Television is the fastest way to spread news and information.

III. Communicative activities. Dialogues. Work in pairs (8 min.)

T.: Let’s work in pairs and make up the dialogues using the words on the blackboard on the topic “Television”. Can you translate some sentences?

–         Чому люди дивляться ТБ?

–         Які твої улюблені фільми?

–         Які програми ти любиш дивитися?

–         Чи ТБ користується широкою популярністю у нашій країні?

–         Що краще: дивитися ТБ чи читати книжки?

You are given for 3 minutes to make up your own dialogues.

Presentation (5 min.)

T: Your dialogues are rather well. I hope you not only watch TV but have time to do the lessons, take an active part in extra-classes activities, and go for a walk with your friends.

IV. Listening comprehension (3 min.)

T: There are a lot of channels on TV. It is very difficult to choose any to watch. Now we shall listen to the short story where Stacey and Charlotte are main characters and choose the correct answer to the questions of the exercise 4, p. 74.

      “Quick, let’s switch on TV,” said Stacey. She and Charlotte ran into the family room. They started switching from channel to channel. They found an interview, a cooking show, and two new programmes. “Boring,” said Stacey. “Let’s switch on MTV. At least we could hear some good music.” “What’s MTV?” asked Charlotte. “Music television,” Stacey replied.

They looked at all the regular channels. “Boring, boring, boring,” said Stacey. “Hey, here’s something.” She had turned to channel 47. At the top of the screen there were the words GHOST THEATRE and under them, WATCH AT YOUR OWN RISK.

“Oh, ghosts!” said Charlotte. “Shall we try it?” asked Stacey. “It’s better than anything else that’s on. “OK,” agreed Charlotte. They looked at each other and giggled.

T: Now let’s watch a short video film. While watching think about the type of programme you have got on the screen.

Where is the Love? (From Elephunk)

      What’s wrong with the world, mama?  People living like they ain’t got no mamas.  I think the whole world’s addicted to the drama.  Only attracted to the things that’ll bring you trauma.  Overseas, yeah we trying to stop terrorism.  But we still got terrorists here living in the USA, the big CIA, the Bloods and the Crips and the KKK.

      But if you only have love for your own ways, then you only leave space to discriminate.  And to discriminate only generates hate, and when you hate then you’re bound to get irate.  Madness is what you demonstrate, and that’s exactly how anger works and operates. Man, we got to have love just to set us straight. Take control of your mind and meditate.  Let your soul gravitate to the love, ya’ll.

      Chorus: People killing, people dying.  Children hurt; I hear them crying.  When you practice what you preach, would you turn the other cheek?  Father, father, father help us.  Send some guidance from above because people got me, got me questioning: where is the love?

      It just ain’t the same, always with change.  New days are strange.  Is the world insane?  If love and peace are so strong, why is there pieces of love that don’t belong?  When nations dropping bombs, chemical gasses filling lungs of little ones, with ongoing suffering as they use the air, so ask yourself: is the loving really gone?

      So I can ask myself: really what is going wrong with this world that we living in?  People keep on giving in.  Making wrong decisions, only visions of them living in.  Not respecting each other, denying thy brother, a war is going on, but the reasons undercover.  The truth is kept secret, swept under the rug.  If you never know truth then you never know love.  Where is the love, ya’ll?  Come on.  I don’t know.  Where is the truth?  Come on.  I don’t know.  Where is the love, ya’ll?


      I feel the weight of the world on my shoulders.  As I’m getting older, ya’ll, people gets colder.  Most of us only care about money making.  Selfishness got us following the wrong direction.  Wrong information always shown by the media.  Negative images is the main criteria.  Infecting the young minds: fascism bacteria.  They just want to act like what they see in the cinemas.  What ever happened to the values of humanity?  Whatever happened to the fairness and equality?  Instead of spreading love, we spreading animosity.  Lack of understanding leading us away from unity.  That’s the reason why sometimes I’m feeling under.  That’s the reason why sometimes I’m feeling down.  It’s no wonder why sometimes I’m feeling under.  Got to keep my faith alive until love is found.  Now ask yourself: where is the love?

  T: Imagine that your friend and you were offered to run a youth channel on local television and you agreed. Let’s join groups of four and think about the name of your channel and make up one-day programme.

      T: It should be mentioned that TV has both positive and negative sides. Now join two teams and debate on the question if TV brings more harm than good.

Team 2 has got an opposite point of view.

    T: At our today’s lesson we have revised and learned the words and word-combinations on the topic “Television”, discussed various preferences, got some new information about television in your life. I suppose you’ve realized that television plays a great role in our life and makes it more colorful and efficient. But don’t forget to do something useful except watching TV.
